A Bug Zapper in Every Bite

About This Video: Syngenta’s billboard — “Turn every seed into a bug zapper” — exhorts farmers to buy its seed corn, engineered with a bacterium gene that kills pests.

Syngenta has genetically engineered its trademark BT corn with implants of the Cry1Ab gene from the Bacillus thuringiensis, which produces a protein that kills corn borers. The agribusiness giant claims its invention poses no harm to the health of humans and other “non target animals.” Yet independent scientists have not tested this claim with long-term research. Some shorter-term studies may indicate a risk to human health Walmart and other retailers have begun to sell a sweet BT corn. Consumers won’t spot it because there is no labeling requirement. Don’t you want to know if you’re eating a bug zapper? If genetically engineered ingredients are in your food, you have a right to know when you buy it.
